Monastiraki

Good for rooftop bars facing the Acropolis, the flea market and souvlaki.

Monastiraki is the square, the ruins stacked around it and the flea market running off the side. The bars are the reason to come after dark: A for Athens, 360 Cocktail Bar, Anglais and Couleur Locale all put a rooftop between you and the lit Acropolis, so get a table before sunset. For food, Thanasis and Bairaktaris sit side by side and both do souvlaki and kebabs without ceremony. Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora are a few steps away. The flea market deserves a loop, not an afternoon.
