Plaka
Good for tavernas under the Acropolis, a historic distillery bar and the lanes of Anafiotika.
Plaka is the old town under the Acropolis, and its reputation as a tourist trap is half deserved. Walk past the tables with laminated photographs. Psaras is the historic taverna set in stone buildings, Yiasemi has a fireplace for winter, and Brettos is billed as the oldest distillery in Athens, with bottles up every wall. The newer end is more interesting than you would expect: Nolan mixes Greek and Asian, Ekiben Kitchen cooks Japanese in front of you and Sushimou does omakase. Anafiotika, the whitewashed lanes above, takes ten minutes and costs nothing.
