Higashiyama

Good for temple slopes, matcha at every turn and a teppanyaki lunch beside the pagoda.

Kiyomizu-dera sits on the hillside and the lanes below it, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, are lined with sweet shops. MATCHA GARDEN, Kyo-Baum Kiyomizu, MALEBRANCHE Kiyomizuzaka and Fujinami all sell matcha in one form or another, so pick by queue length. Signature Restaurant YASAKA does teppanyaki beside the pagoda and Mizai serves kaiseki, and Touan Yasaka Gallery shows Kyoto ceramics. Walk it early. By mid-morning the slopes are shoulder to shoulder.
