Cannaregio

Good for canalside osteria, wine bars and a quieter Venice.

Cannaregio is where Venice feels lived in. Al Timon does grilled meat by the canal, Vini da Gigio pairs its market cooking with a long wine list, and La Zucca leans on seasonal vegetables. Osteria Mocenigo and Trattoria Bar Pontini cover the regional dishes, while Il Paradiso Perduto hosts live music most nights. Fondazione Prada shows contemporary art in the same sestiere. Walk it in the evening, when the tourist crowds have gone back to San Marco.
